Roland Randol was the stepfather of Alec Sadler. He is an activist against corporate corruption and has greatly influenced the beliefs of his son, Julian. Before they moved into the Sadler's farm, he and his father were running their own, and Julian was supposed to inherit it, until the bank took it from them.
After Roland's death, his anti-corporate rhetoric was vehemently embraced by his vengeful son Julian Randol. Julian went on to become the feared anti-corporate terrorist and revolutionary known as Theseus during the 2030's, whose activities and writings would in turn inspire the Liber8 terrorist organization in the 2060's and 2070's. Therefore, in a way, if Theseus was the "grandfather" of Liber8, Roland is the unwitting "great-grandfather" of sorts of the movement.
